With more people working from home (than possibly ever before) due to COVID-19, there have been some positive side effects benefiting the environment. But it can definitely be hard to see the positive these days, so here’s a quick look at some of the good happening in our environment… Less people commuting reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which is a HUGE win in the climate change fight! Less time spent in the office equals less office waste, everything from the use of paper to the use of plastic (save the rain forest and save the oceans!). And we can’t forget the positive impact quarantine has had on wildlife, especially among aquatic life – sea turtles are being spotted laying eggs on beaches they once avoided (thanks to less pollution and human interference) and some fish colonies in Europe are projected to double their biomass (thanks to a major drop in fishing).

So how do we keep the eco-friendly movement going (especially with all the changes to our daily lives and routines from COVID-19)? We’ve broken the work day down into three basic categories with a couple of tips that can be applied to whether you work from home or in an office. Of course these are just a few ideas to help keep Mother Nature around for centuries to come; we’d love to hear all suggestions or lifestyle changes you’ve adopted to go green.

  1. PPE For Covid-19:
    – Cut strings on disposable masks
    – Recycle hand sanitizer bottles when you can (if the bottle isn’t recyclable, then re-purpose it!)
    – Use reusable masks
  2. At Your Desk:
    – Switch to Ecosia as a web browser (even if it’s just occasionally)
    – Turn off all electronics once you’re done for the day (monitor, printer, desk lamp, etc.)
    – Invest in an air purifying desk plant
  3. Break Time:
    – Cut out disposable cutlery/eatery (if you’re ordering out, ask them to skip the plastic fork/knife and reuse the delivery Tupperware)
    – Switch from plastic water bottles to a reusable water bottle (same goes for coffee cups)
    – Buy local groceries and cook at home when you can (don’t forget that reusable shopping bag)

Remember… “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.” -Anne-Marie Bonneau @ZeroWasteChef
